Quality Meat Scotland's core function is to work with the Scottish red meat industry to improve its efficiency and profitability and to maximise its contribution to Scotland's economy.
Scotland's red meat sector businesses forming the production
chain from farmgate to the consumer's plate produce over 250,000
tonnes of beef, lamb and pork annually. The market is worth some
£1500 million annually to Scotland's GDP and means that the
Scotland sector is a major contributor to Scotland's food and
drinks industry.
The Scottish red meat industry has one of the highest levels of
assurance memberships in Europe. Around 90% of cattle, 90% of sheep
and virtually all pigs are currently assured.
The Quality Meat Scotland Assurance Scheme covers the production
chain from the farm gate to the plate through a variety of schemes.
All members are independently assessed annually by Scottish Food
Quality Certification (SFQC) to make sure they are achieving set
production standards.
