Year of Food and Drink

In 2009, Scotland hosted its first Year of Homecoming. The year was a great success, attracting 95,000 additional visitors to Scotland and generating £53.7 million in additional revenue and delivering many other benefits to Scotland.

The Scottish Government dedicated 2010 as a Year of Food and Drink, concentrating on enhancing Scotland's reputation as a Land of Food and Drink. As one of Scotland's most distinct attributes, food and drink has played, and continues to play, a strong role in shaping our cultural identity and heritage.

Scotland is a land of food and drink, a land which is rich in primary produce, a land whose produce is in demand and a land that represents quality.  This is a reputation that we should celebrate and seek to enhance. The Year of Food and Drink sought to do exactly that so that more people, both at home and visiting Scotland, are aware of, and have opportunities to enjoy, Scotland's premium quality food and drink at its source.

EventScotland, the National Events Agency, continues to work closely with the events industry to extend and enhance the food and drink experience at events throughout Scotland as a legacy of the Year of Food and Drink. For more information visit the website.

The Year of Food & Drink Brand

Scotland Food & Drink worked with the Scottish Government, EventScotland and VisitScotland who run Eat Scotland, to promote the Year of Food and Drink and boost Scotland's reputation as a Land of Food and Drink.

EventScotland worked with the events industry to:

  • Raise the profile and brand awareness of Scotland as a Land of Food and Drink
  • To improve the quality of food and drink offering at events
  • To enhance joint working between the food & drink industry and the events industry

A logo was developed for use by food outlets that use more than 20% Scottish produce to enable them to demonstrate their support for the Year of Food and Drink as well as boost business.

Those involved in any other types of Scottish businesses that have a connection to quality food and drink were still able to demonstrate their support by using the supporting logo.
