Kosher Food in the USA

Kosher food is growing within the UK, but in the USA it is a huge market. Indeed, according to the US Bureau of Census, in 2005, 40% of US grocery sales were certified Kosher and the average number of kosher products in American supermarkets was 17,000.

Market figures vary, but in 2006, the Seattle Times reported the US Kosher market to be worth $14.6 Billion. As the Jewish population continues to decrease, kosher foods are moving into more mainstream markets with more than 20% of American shoppers buying Kosher. According to USA Today, only about 15% of American Jews keep Kosher with 80% of all kosher food sales being made outside of the traditional Jewish market. The same newspaper’s website also reports that the kosher food market is enjoying an annual growth of approximately 15%. In comparison, non-kosher food sales in American supermarkets are growing at approximately 4 percent a year. Finally, Mintel’s findings that ‘Kosher’ was the most popular new-product claim in the US for the second consecutive year in 2007 – ahead of ‘all-natural’, ‘no additives/preservatives’ and ‘organic’ – clearly demonstrates the interest in this growing market.
