The conference Your Food. Your Health. Your Industry: Working together for change, was held in Dundee on Tuesday. It is the 9th annual event organised by three of the most respected organisations in Scotland - the Scottish Food and Drink Federation (SFDF), the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) and the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS) - and is a valuable forum to discuss topical issues within the food industry.
The Symposium heard from a number of experts including Dr Dominic King from Imperial College London on developments in behavioural science and how effective public policy can influence food choice. A view from the Scottish Government, regulators the Food Standards Agency (Scotland) and industry case studies were provided by Robert Wiseman Dairies and PepsiCo.
Flora McLean, Director of the Scottish Food and Drink Federation said: “Food and drink manufacturers have a responsibility in contributing to the health and wellbeing of Scotland. The willingness of our industry to lead and contribute to this debate is testament to the importance of this issue.
“We are committed to making a positive contribution, not only to the responsibility deal and the Obesity Action Plan, but through them support Government efforts to help consumers lead healthier lives. Whilst the statistics might not change overnight, for real, deliverable change to occur, it must happen in partnership with industry and build on the progress already made”.
Carol Donnelly, Chair of the IFST Scottish Branch, said: “The IFST in Scotland were delighted with the outcome of the recent symposium and particularly with the contributions made by a variety of different organisations to curb obesity in Scotland by encouraging healthier food and lifestyles. It is a testimony to the ongoing cooperation between SFDF, IFST and REHIS that we can work together to create such a forum for discussion and debate, which can make a valuable contribution to improving the nation’s health”.
