Among the VIP faces who turned out to give their backing to Craig Wilson, chef proprietor of Eat on the Green, Udny - who hoped to raise £60,000 on the day - was First Minister Alex Salmond.

Mr Salmond joined Craig at Udny in the early hours of Saturday morning to fly to Inverness by helicopter where the chef cooked at Café 1 with Lady Claire Macdonald before heading south and touching down at the annual Taste of Grampian food and drink festival.

There Craig prepared a Scotch Beef Aberdeen Angus Bhuna on a coriander buttery in front of a packed audience with assistance from former Miss Scotland and Miss UK, Katharine Brown.

Katharine, who is healthy eating ambassador for Quality Meat Scotland, threw herself into the spirit of the occasion. As well as adding her own contribution to the kilted chef’s charity sporran, she earned a donation for the cause by accepting a peck on the cheek from hilarious north-east chef duo, the Two Fat Laddies, who had to climb onto an upturned milk crate to reach!

Donning a kilt in the spirit of the occasion, Michelin-starred chef Jean-Christophe Novelli also joined Craig and Katharine on stage along with Quality Meat Scotland chairman, Jim McLaren, whose services were called on to act as an impromptu auctioneer.

The three lots sold – a saddle of venison donated by Lady Claire Macdonald, Scotch Beef donated by Scotch Premier and a culinary experience spontaneously offered by Jean-Christophe – raised more than £3000 in the space of a few minutes for Maggie’s with the First Minister among those in the audience who reached into their wallets.

Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs, Richard Lochhead also attended Taste of Grampian and lent his support. Among those who joined the kilted chef at his various city stops throughout the day were Brian Adam, Minister for Parliamentary Business and Chief Whip, in Aberdeen and Shona Robison, Minister for Commonwealth Games and Sport, in Dundee. In Stirling he was joined by Cabinet Secretary for Parliamentary Business, Bruce Crawford, and in Glasgow by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and TV chef Jacqueline O’Donnell. In Edinburgh Craig was supported by Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill before heading home to Udny Green to be met by Minister for Environment, Stewart Stevenson.
