There will be an opportunity for children and adults to test their knowledge on a variety of touchscreen interactive games aimed at helping children and families make safe and healthier food choices.

What's more, they will be able to take the hand-wash challenge, where visitors to the stand can test their hand-washing technique under an ultraviolet light to check where bugs might lurk unseen.

Crowds will also gather four times a day to watch Scottish guest chefs Siobhan Ingram and Robert Tiffin demonstrate delicious, easy to prepare recipes that can be enjoyed as part of a healthy. balanced diet.

Charles Milne, director of the Food Standards Agency in Scotland, said: "The Royal Highland Show is a flagship event for consumers and the food industry in Scotland.

"We are delighted to be back with our interactive stand, as it is essential that consumers have as much clear and reliable information about food safety and healthy eating as possible in a format that is accessible, useful and appealing.

"The interactive activities on our new stand are designed to make consumers stop and think about food safety in the kitchen as well as the benefits of eating a healthy diet.

"It is important for us to engage directly with the public to discuss the food issues that matter to them and this show provides an excellent opportunity for the Food Standards Agency to achieve this."

Visitors to the Agency's stand can also find out more about the Food Hygiene Information Scheme (FHIS) in Scotland. The scheme provides consumers with at-a-glance information about the food hygiene standards in outlets supplying food to the public, including restaurants, cafes, shops and takeaways.

Thanks to this scheme, Scottish consumers can find out how well their local food retailers and caterers are performing, and they can make informed choices about local businesses they want to support.

The Food Standards Agency stand is located in the Food Hall on Avenue LH (stand number 0).

The Royal Highland Show takes place at Ingliston, Edinburgh from 23-26 June.
