The 12 finalist schools' recipes were judged by a panel of food industry experts, including entrepreneur Levi Roots, head chef from Fifteen Andrew Parkinson, Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King and representatives from the British Nutrition Foundation and the Design & Technology Association.
Three winners were chosen in the three categories of Primary, Secondary and Special schools and the winning recipes were:
- Primary Schools: St Columba's Primary School in Oban, with the 'Beef Strumble', a hearty beef stew topped with a crunchy bread- topping
- Secondary Schools: St George's School, Harpenden who wowed judges with a healthy meat-free 'Beetroot Burger' dish
- Special Schools: Le Murier School from Guernsey, whose spicy twist to a British classic - 'Indian Cottage Pie' - secured a winners' spot
The winning schools were given £500 to spend on whatever they choose, with the remaining finalists each receiving £100 cheques.
Jat Sahota Sainsbury's Head of Sponsorship, said: "It was great to meet so many young people who are passionate about food and cooking. All of the students at the Active Kids Get Cooking event showed a great level of knowledge and creativity.
"The event highlighted exactly why schemes like this are so important. By working directly with schools, we are helping to equip children with the skills and confidence they need to make informed decisions about what they eat."
