The Best Volume Supermarket Award 2011 was collected by Sainsbury's for the third year running for working in a responsible and sustainable way, adding to the vast list of awards that the retailer has recently won for Corporate Responsibility.

The supermarket also won the Best Calf Commendation in the Good Dairy category for setting up an alternative supply chain for black and white bull calves, which then go to Sainsbury's beef supply chain.

Group Commercial Director Mike Coupe, said: "Sainsbury's values make us stand out from other supermarkets so it's excellent to get recognition for this and for our continued efforts as a responsible, ethical and sustainable retailer.

"We are extremely proud to be awarded for remaining true to our values and making sure that every step of the process is sustainable - from asking for the highest standard of welfare and production of our farmers and suppliers to the way we communicate with our customers and form our policies.

"As a leading world retailer we want to continue to support British farming and work to create even better supply chains and sustainable sources, including cutting carbon emissions and improving welfare. We also want to continue our position as Number One retailer of RSPCA endorsed Freedom Food."

The Supermarket Awards are based on the latest Supermarket Survey, which score and rate the UK's top supermarkets on their approach to farm animal welfare. The award recognises and rewards supermarkets for working in a sustainable and responsible way for eggs, chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, pigs, dairy cattle, sheep, beef and farmed fish. The survey also scores at rates supermarkets on how they maintain dialogue with stakeholders, proactive management of issues and striving for improvement.

Sainsbury's pride themselves on their local sourcing policy and source a significant amount of product from Scotland's farmers and food producers.  Scotland Food & Drink is hosting 2 meet the buyer events with this retail giant in Inverness and Kelso later this month.
