To highlight the real benefits a business can gain by recruiting apprentices, Skills Development Scotland is leading the first Scottish Apprenticeship Week from September 5–9.
We hope that partners and key stakeholders will support the week by showcasing the real advantages this training model offers to Scottish employers.
These benefits include:
• Hiring people who can contribute to output from day one while being trained to an individual business’ needs
• Having their training costs partly met by SDS
• Offering staff the opportunity to train right up to SVQ Level 3 or even 5 in some sectors – equivalent to a university qualification
• Having a learning provider ‘on hand’ to make sure everything is working out with your new recruits
• Using apprenticeships to plan for succession within a skilled workforce
• Staging the costs of getting fully qualified personnel
• Getting up to £2000 incentive if you a business is able to recruit someone who has faced a barrier to getting a job in the past eg unemployment
Over 11,000 employers in Scotland are already taking advantage of the apprenticeship programme. There are currently over 80 different training frameworks – from aquaculture to engineering, from food processing to customer service.
If you’d like to talk to an adviser about taking on an apprentice, call the SDS employer helpline 0800 783 6000.
This year also celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Modern Apprenticeship Awards Closing date for entries is 12pm on September 8 so do get your application in if you are already involved in apprenticeships.
All apprentices in Scotland must be employed to be eligible for a publicly-funded contribution to training costs.
Scottish Apprenticeship Week is managed by Skills Development Scotland. For more information about the organisation, visit the website.
