The kids had been working hard with local chef Graeme Pallister, of the award-winning 63 Tay Street in Perth, on a healthy eating programme - including tending to a vegetable patch - when they came across something they did not recognise.

Head chef Graeme quickly identified the find as rare white truffles and sent them off for analysis. The truffles are an edible type called tuber maculatum and are the first of their kind to be found in Scotland.

Karen Young, headmistress at the school, said she hoped to find a buyer for the truffles with all proceeds going towards the ongoing campaign with Graeme to build a working kitchen in the school and create a cooking programme.
