The Vision in Business for the Environment of Scotland (VIBES) awards recognise the commitment, actions and achievements of Scottish companies in reducing their impact on the environment.

Dr Mackie was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the ceremony by Iain McLellan, from Environmental Protection UK who said “The award this year goes to the chairman of a company which strives to be the greenest company in Britain.  As a farming and food entrepreneur, he has more recently been a driving force behind campaigns to boost renewable energy ownership by Scottish businesses.  In his new report, ‘The Real Rationale for Renewable Energy’, he makes a passionate case for on-shore wind farms to develop further in Scotland, calling for local authorities to speed up planning and for communities to be allowed in on the ownership of wind farms.

His Aberdeenshire farm has achieved excellent results from the installation of three wind turbines, which provide more energy than the business requires.  Through a range of biodiversity, recycling and waste management projects, the business has clearly demonstrated their commitment to low carbon strategies.  These achievements have been showcased in a range of different arenas, including the Royal Society of Edinburgh’s report ‘Facing up to Climate Change.’

Through innovation, environmental commitment and engagement on both local and national levels, it is clear that the recipient, as well as the company, embodies the values of the VIBES Awards.  It is my pleasure to announce that the winner of this award is Dr Maitland Mackie of Mackie’s Ice Cream.  “

Maitland Mackie response included his thought that: “Saving the world for our grandchildren, the next generation, has to be the most over-riding and crucial objective of our generation.  I would be delighted If I have helped in any way. For myself and my family’s business to be recognised as missionary in its delivery is indeed a great honour.”
