The new store will be around 2400sqft and will be in former shop premises, currently empty, on Albert Street. It will be in addition to the existing Co-operative Food store in Pickaquoy Road, which will remain open.
The Co-operative Group has submitted an application to transfer the premises’ existing liquor licence. Subject to that transfer, and completing necessary building work to fit out the building, the store is expected to be open by next spring.
A spokesperson for The Co-operative Group said: "The Co-operative is proud of its record of operating at the heart of many communities across Scotland, including Orkney.
"A new store in Kirkwall will create new jobs and will complement our existing outlet in the town, while providing an asset for the local community."
The Co-operative is the fourth-largest food retailer in Scotland, and currently operates three stores in Orkney, at Pickaquoy Road in Kirkwall, in Dounby and in Stromness.
The Co-operative Group is the UK’s largest mutual business, owned by over six million consumers. It is the UK’s fifth-biggest food retailer, the leading convenience store operator and a major financial services provider, operating The Co-operative Bank, Britannia and The Co-operative Insurance. It is also Britain’s largest farming operation.
The group operates 4800 retail trading outlets, employs more than 106,000 people and has an annual turnover of more than £13bn.
