The store has been equipped so it can benefit from the system, which already supplies many homes and smaller businesses in Lerwick.

Waste cardboard from The Co-operative Food store in Holmsgarth Road has been supplied to Shetland Heat Energy and Power’s “waste to energy” plant for some time but now the store itself will benefit from the district heating system.

David Dancy, store manager, said: “Shetland’s district heating system is a tremendous initiative and by making use of waste from across Shetland, as well as from Orkney and offshore, it benefits the entire community.

“The Co-operative has long played a role in supplying waste for the plant but now we have invested in our store to equip it to benefit as an end user as well.

“This is a local initiative we are very pleased to be part of. It means Shetland’s waste will help keep our customers and staff warm for years to come, while at the same time reducing our carbon footprint.”
