In the SPAR East Wemyss initiative, for every carrier bag that a customer reuses in store they receive a 'Green' voucher valued at 10p, and they simply drop the voucher in the collection box of their choice.

There is a box for both East Wemyss and Coaltown of Wemyss Primary Schools and this week the schools received cheques for £135 and £165 respectively.

Acting store manager, Michelle Pease, said: "As a responsible retailer we are committed to reducing the number of plastic carrier bags used in our store and to help us to achieve this aim we chose to help local schools in the process."
