Grocery habits are changing

Kantar have released figures showing that retail sales increased by 9.1% in the 12 weeks to 19 April. With grocery sales in April being £524 million higher than they were in April 2019. Understandably, the number of lunches at home during lockdown has nearly doubled, with food and drink to go sales experiencing a fall.

Households took fewer shopping trips but there was an uplift in spend on each trip to £26.02. Friday and Saturday are continuing to be popular shopping days, yet Monday and Thursday are seeing a rise in popularity as social distancing measures disrupt the traditional working week.

Large format supermarkets supply the majority of food and drink in the UK but we’re now seeing Convenience taking a 16.3% share of market and Online sales now accounting for 10.2%.
