There is no doubt that Brits and Scots love traditional hot cross buns. Though traditional hot cross buns filled with raisins, sultanas or currants may need a recipe makeover in near future, due to the rising prices for raisins resulting from the heatwave in California in September 2017.

The raisin shortage opens a door for Scottish bakers and manufacturers to rethink the classic hot cross bun recipe. There is a great opportunity for them to plan ahead, be innovative and develop new varieties of hot cross buns ranging from new textures, flavours and colours in near future.
