If you’ve got a favourite Orkney food and drink product or retailer, or if you’ve enjoyed a great meal in the islands, the organisers of the 2019/2020 Orkney Food and Drink Awards want to hear from you.
The biennial awards recognise the very best of Orkney produce, while also helping highlight the huge range and quality of food and drink on offer in the county.
Twelve award categories for the 2019/2020 event cover everything from the best bar and takeaway meals, to the finest bakery, fish, drink and dairy products. Voters can also nominate their favourite café, tearoom, or local food retailer.
Eventual winners will be decided on the strength of the public vote alone, though a 13th award category - covering outstanding performance by a local food and drink business - will be judged by the directors of OFD.
Voting for the 2019/2020 Orkney Food and Drink Awards officially got underway online yesterday (Tuesday, 19 February).
Edgar Balfour, project manager for Orkney Food and Drink, said:
“The public response to last year’s awards was unprecedented, with over 6,000 nominations made. That demonstrates the passion local folk and visitors alike have for Orkney produce, and we’re hoping to do even better this time around. So, if you’ve got a favourite product, or love a particular restaurant or café, then please get online and cast your vote. To qualify for a vote, membership of OFD is required, but we welcome all food and drink businesses.”
“The awards are a real celebration of everything that’s great about food and drink from Orkney and they actually play a key role in marketing the islands to the rest of the world. That makes the support of the public all the more important.”
The 2019/2020 awards are again being sponsored by NorthLink Ferries.
Seumas Campbell, Serco’s customer service director at NorthLink Ferries, added:
“We are very excited to once again be part of the Orkney Food and Drink Awards. Every year the awards showcase some of the amazing local talent, producers and suppliers, of which many are our own, and we are very pleased to offer our support as the official event sponsor.
“We would like to wish everyone who has entered the best of luck and would encourage as many people as possible to vote for their top choices.”
Further updates on the awards will be posted on the Orkney Food and Drink website in the coming months.
