The Ardgowan Distillery will be unique: it is a Lowland distillery with maritime characteristics, given its close proximity to the sea and the Gulf Stream. It’s the perfect place to distil Single Malt because of the quality of the water from the local spring which is beautifully clean and sweet - it has been analysed in the laboratories of Scottish Water and is perfect for producing a classic, lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
With more than 40 years in the trade our Master Whisky Maker, Max McFarlane rose to become the lead whisky maker at Edrington, and his signature can be found on the label of some of their finest whiskies, including their multiple award-winning Highland Park 30-year-old.
An Inverkip local, Max has now joined Ardgowan Distillery to help us create our flagship series of lowland single malts. His dream is to help us craft a whisky from start to finish, carefully considering every aspect from grain to cask to glass to make a maritime whisky like no other.
It will be a year or two until we will be producing our own spirit, so in the meantime we have given Max free rein (more or less!) to create his own series of whiskies under the ‘Clydebuilt’ label. This allows Max to seek out and find the best casks – of whatever age and location – and bring them together to produce our very own series of whiskies.
Clydebuilt Coppersmith is a limited-edition blend of malts from Speyside and Highland distilleries wholly matured in first fill Oloroso sherry casks. These malts have been selected and blended with great skill by our master whisky maker Max McFarlane.
Coppersmith is the first in a series of limited edition Clydebuilt whiskies which the Ardgowan Distillery will release in the years ahead. Each bottle in the Clydebuilt series will celebrate the pride shown by generations of workers on the Clyde, who together built some of the world’s most illustrious ships.
It is this spirit that is to be found in every bottle of Clydebuilt whisky.
The Ardgowan Distillery Company has also launched Ardgowan Expedition, our very first limited-edition bottling
Each bottle is individually numbered and contains whisky which has travelled to the South Pole and back, carried by explorer Robert Swan OBE and his son Barney on their South Pole Energy Challenge.
The 20-year-old premium blended malt has been specially selected by Ardgowan Chairman Willie Phillips and includes classic single casks from upper Speyside and the northern Highlands.
